Graptemys is a genus of turtles known commonly as map turtles due to the map-like markings on the carapace. They are aquatic, freshwater turtles that are found throughout the eastern half of the United States and northward into southern Canada.
There are currently 14 recognized species of map turtles. Throughout the 1970s Mississippi, False, and Ouachita map turtles were bred and hatched out by the thousands for the pet trade. Due to pressures from commerical collection, many species of map turtle are protected or regulated in their native ranges.
