Common kingsnakes of the Lampropelitis getula ssp. group are especially hearty and robust snakes, and even wild caught specimens are usually handleable. Common Kingsnakes make excellent first snakes, as well as first breeding projects.

Mole and Prarie Kingsnakes, Lampropeltis calligaster ssp., are attractive snakes not common in the hobby, with brownish or grayish saddles, usually on a gray, tan, or greenish background.
